Glossary

Money words, defined

The vocabulary of a company with a bank account, a card, a wallet and a few clients abroad: the rail a payment travels on, the form a contractor signs, the day a month stops moving.

10 terms, A to Z

Each term in one sentence

The first sentence of each entry is the definition, quotable on its own; the rest is the example that makes it stick, and where Orla touches it.

1099-NEC →
Form 1099-NEC is the IRS information return on which a US business reports what it paid a contractor or another non-employee for services during a calendar year.
Accounts payable →
Accounts payable (AP) is the money a business owes its suppliers for goods and services already received and invoiced but not yet paid: a current liability on the balance sheet.
ACH vs SWIFT →
ACH is the US network that moves payments between bank accounts in batches inside the country; SWIFT is the international network banks use to send each other the instructions for a wire.
KYB →
KYB (Know Your Business) is the due diligence a regulated financial institution runs on a company before serving it: that the business exists, who owns and controls it, and what it does.
Month-end close →
A month-end close is the routine a business runs after a month ends to make that month's books complete and reconciled, and then to lock the period so its figures stop changing.
Net 30 →
Net 30 is a payment term on an invoice meaning the full amount is due within 30 days of the invoice date, with no discount for paying earlier.
Off-ramp →
An off-ramp is a service that converts cryptocurrency into conventional money and delivers it to a bank account or a card; an on-ramp is the same road in the other direction, bank money into crypto.
Stablecoin →
A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency token designed to hold a fixed value against a reference currency, most often one US dollar per token, with the issuer holding reserves and promising to redeem each token at that value.
Three-way match →
A three-way match is an accounts payable control that pays a supplier's invoice only once it agrees with the purchase order and the receiving record on quantity, price and terms.
W-8BEN →
Form W-8BEN is the IRS form on which a foreign individual certifies to a US payer that they are not a US person and, where a tax treaty applies, claims a reduced rate of withholding.

Tax entries describe forms and deadlines as the IRS states them and are not tax advice: the person who decides is your accountant.
